Tenninkyo Gorge & Mt. Asahidake Day Trip
The stunning and powerful nature of Hokkaido is most visible at Daisetsuzan National Park - Japan’s largest - replete with volcanic features such as Tenninkyo Gorge’s columnar joint rock formations, waterfalls, springs & onsens, reached after a 3-hour drive from Sapporo. Hagoromo Falls, the largest waterfall in Hokkaido, is accessed through an easy but wild nature trail from Tenninkyo Gorge culminating in the graceful waterfall. There is a foot bath area near the start of the trail which is perfect for a short rest while admiring the gorge’s natural beauty. Next, we’ll drive to the nearby Asahidake Onsen, stopping off at a freshwater spring where our water bottles can be filled from the pure, volcanic-rock-filtered source. Lunch options at Asahidake Ropeway include the usual Japanese staples such as ramen, tempura, rice curry and more, with lovely views.
After lunch, we’ll ride the ropeway to the Sugatami Highland Plateau for a rewarding 1 - 2 hour nature trail among small ponds leading to a series of steaming fumaroles (sulfur vents). Depending on the season, it’s possible to experience wildflowers, the island’s earliest fall foliage, or knee-deep snow. We’ll end the day with a soak at Asahidake Resort’s oldest onsen – Yukomanso Ryokan - with indoor & outdoor baths. At every time of year, this is an unforgettable day trip to the high mountains of Hokkaido.
