Asahikawa & Sounkyo Gorge Day Trip
This active day trip to Asahikawa & Sounkyo Gorge is for animal & nature lovers. The day starts with a two hour drive to Asahiyama Zoo - Hokkaido’s best zoo - which is known for its creative enclosures and variety of endemic & international animals. We’ll then visit a century-old sake brewery - with free samples - followed by lunch. After lunch, we’ll drive further north to see the powerful nature at Sounkyo Gorge where waterfalls tumble down the cliff walls in succession, making Sounkyo Gorge the best waterfalls spot in Hokkaido. In early spring, various wildlife seek shelter in the gorge, making it a good time for wildlife spotting. Typical sightings include Ezo deer, white-tailed eagles, Mallard ducks, red Hokkaido foxes and more. The Sounkyo Ice Festival, held from late January to March, also should not be missed (entry is self-pay). We’ll end the day with a fantastic hot springs bath overlooking the gorge, before heading back to Sapporo.
